Abstract

A marine cage culture farming of seabass (Lates calcarifer in Matang District, Sarawak was studied. Pertormance data were collected, water quality analysed and farm personee interviewed. Being the pioneer in this industry, this farm faced many problems. Water quality analysis was limited, though the study showed parameters fell within the range that is accepted for fish culture. Poor survival rate in the first production cycle was due to poor management and husbandry. Financial analysis showed that this farm can become viable if fry supply is available, higher survival rates are achieved and a cheaper feed cost. Comments and recommendation to improve farm performance and profitability are given.
