Abstract

Introduction: Plastic bags are really useful and make people’s life easier, however the overuse of plastic bag had leads to the plastic waste problems. Plastic waste takes a long time to decompose in the landfill and had contributes to serious environmental pollution such as soil, water and air pollution. Implementation of proper laws and regulation for plastics manufacturing and usage can reduce its toxic effect on the environment and human health. Objective: This study aimed to study the knowledge and practice on no plastic bag campaign among undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted at five selected faculties in UPM by clustered sampling. A total of 380 undergraduate students from five selected faculties were enrolled in this study through stratified sampling. A set of modified questionnaires from previous study were distributed to the respondents. They need to answer all four sections of the questionnaires to assess the knowledge and practice on no plastic bag campaign. Then the data analysis was performed by using IBM SPSS version 25. Result and Discussion: The results showed that majority the respondents have high level of knowledge (97.6%) and moderate level of practice (18.2%). However, the chi-square test shows that there was no significant difference between knowledge and practice on no plastic bag campaign among undergraduate students in UPM, as the result shows that (ϰ²=4.685, p=0.096). Another chi-square test was done to determine the association between knowledge and practice on No Plastic Bag Campaign among undergraduate students in UPM according to five different faculties. The chi-square results revealed that only Faculty of Science (ϰ²=9.520, p=0.009) had showed that there is significant association between the knowledge and practice regarding no plastic bag campaign., while for other faculties show that there is no significant association between the knowledge and practice as the result shows that Faculty of Agriculture (ϰ²=4.198, p=0.123), Faculty of Engineering (ϰ²=1.665, p=0.435), Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (ϰ²=1.172, p=0.556) and for Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences shows that no statistic are computed because students’ knowledge is constant. Conclusion: In conclusion, The No Plastic Bag Campaign can be seen as an effective effort in tackling plastic pollution in Malaysia; however, environmental awareness of the public is still lacking. Hence, Malaysia’s government must play their role in providing legislative action to restrict the single-use plastic bags and its manufacturing to seriously tackle plastic pollution problems and nurture the public with environmental education continuously in order to protecting the sustainability of environment.
