Abstract
Introduction: Work-related injury is any personal injury, illness or death caused by an occupational accident incurred by a worker in relation to the performance of his or her job. Studies on WRI in various occupational sectors have been performed in Malaysia such as in industry, agriculture and healthcare sector but the study on incidents that occur in institutions of higher learning are very much lacking. Hence, this study is conducted to provide valuable data which is profitable for the work-related injury and its associated factors among staff of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia during COVID-19. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study was done in this study to look at the socio-demographic factors and employment characteristics among the staff in FMHS and it’s association with work-related injury during Covid-19 pandemic. This study also looks into the characteristics of work-related injury during COVID-19. The participants of this study are selected via proportional quota sampling technique. The study instrument used is an online questionnaire that consists of 3 sections: (1) Socio-demographic factors, (2) Employment characteristics, (3) Injury characteristics. The data will be analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science program (SPSS) version 25. Comparison of proportion to look at the association between both categorical data has been done using Fisher's Exact Test. Result: This study showed that based on 101 respondents, 10 or 9.9% respondent was having WRI. There is no association between socio-demographic factors and WRIs among respondents. Fisher's exact test showed that a factor that significantly associated with WRI was workplace during Covid 19 pandemic, p=0.009. Conclusion: In our study, we have concluded that there is no significant association between the socio-demographic factors with the work-related injury of FMHS, UPM staff during COVID-19 pandemic. However, this study has shown that the employment characteristics, which is respondents’ workplace, has an association with work-related injury. We hope that this study will be of good help to understand work-related injury and its factors especially among public university staff during a pandemic.
