Abstract
Introduction : Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of impairment globally. In Malaysia, the prevalence of stroke showed an increasing trend from 2010 to 2014, whereby incidence of ischemic stroke is approximately increased by three-fold whilst, for hemorrhagic stroke increased at minimum rate, respectively. Objective: This study aimed to determine the knowledge regarding stroke and its associated factors among final year students of Medical and Health Sciences-based students in Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among all final year students of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), University Putra Malaysia (UPM) (Nursing, Nutrition, Dietitian, Biomedicine, Medicine. Environmental and Occupational Health) from 27 th April to 9 th October 2020. The questionnaire used was adopted from a previous study conducted in Pakistan which will be described later. Descriptive analysis and Chi-Square Test were utilised to investigate the association between socio-demographic factors (independent variables) and the level of knowledge of final year students toward strokes (dependent variable). Result: Of 290 respondents, as many as 212 (73.1%) respondents responded. Most of the medicine students ( 84.4%) had high levels of knowledge in strokes compared to other programmes in FHMS. Majority obtained stroke knowledge from syllabus that was in university classes in their respective programme (58.5%). There was a significant association between sources of knowledge (class/syllabus and media social) with level of knowledge (p<0.05). There was a significant association between ethnicity, religion, the types of programmes, familiarity of strokes and history of taking care of stroke patients with a level of knowledge towards stroke (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was proven from this study that although some might had adequate knowledge regarding stroke, the majority had average or insufficient knowledge. Considering the worldwide morbidity and mortality of strokes, efforts in raising public’s awareness such as specific messaging campaigns regarding strokes should be conducted to ensure that the population was at least well educated with the basic steps to take when facing a stroke.
