Abstract
Introduction: The number of fast food outlets available in Malaysia are increasing every year to cater the population’s behaviour. Fast food workers working hour pattern is based on shift work which is not less than 9 hours per shift for full-time workers. This problem should be addressed as they are juggling their work-life balance that may affect their mental state. Objective: To investigate the association between work-life balance and mental health among shift workers in Kajang, Selangor. Methodology: This study is a cross-sectional study that used a simple random sampling method in recruiting the respondents. This study involved 336 respondents of shift workers from fast food restaurants in Kajang. The respondents were given a set of self-administered questionnaires which were provided in two languages (English and Malay) that was adapted from previous studies as the research instruments to achieve the objectives of the study. In this study, the mental health of the worker will be measured in terms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Work-life Balance Hayman Scale was used to measure the work-life balance of the workers, 10-item Perceived Stress Scale was used to measure stress, 7-item General Anxiety Disorder was used to measure anxiety, and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire was used to measure depression. The Malay version for each questionnaire mentioned above was taken from previous study which has been tested for validity and reliability, thus showing a good reliability except for Work-life Balance Hayman Scale 2005 that must be self-translated in this study and checked for validity and reliability through expert and pre-test. Result and Discussion: 39.4% of the respondents reported to have a low work-life balance, 91.1% of the respondents reported having stress, 73.1% had anxiety, and 71.6% had depression. Work-life balance has been shown to have an association with anxiety (r=0.177) and depression (0.206) but not with stress. Conclusion: This research clearly indicates that poor work-life balance among respondents does leads to anxiety and depression. Fast food industries should implement a workers-oriented flexible schedule arrangement in increasing the work-life balance of the workers.
