Abstract
Introduction: Work-life balance is commonly defined as the ability of a working person to maintain balance involvement between their work and personal life obligations. It seemed to be challenging for not only to the employees in general but also among teaching professionals due to increasing work demands. The inability to balance between work and personal life may increase tendency of mental health problems. Objective: This research aims to explore the relationship between worklife balance (WLB) and mental health among secondary school teachers in Selangor. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 237 secondary school teachers who were randomly selected based on inclusive criteria of this study. A set of self-administered online questionnaires including sociodemographic section, Work-Family Conflict Scale, GDA-7 to measure anxiety and PHQ-9 to measure depression was used. The data obtained were analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 22 to be tested by descriptive analysis, chi-square analysis and Kendall’s tau-b analysis. Result and discussion: The sample comprised of 70% female, 41.4% aged 31 to 40 years old and 59.9% were more than 10 years in teaching profession. The prevalence of anxiety and depression were 10.5% and 8.0% respectably. Respondents experienced work-to-family conflict (WFC) (Mean = 2.20 ± 0.62) more than familyto- work conflict (FWC) (Mean 1.86 ± 0.57). Working person had trouble to participate in family roles due to workload problem. There was a strong and positive correlation between work-to-family conflict (WFC) with anxiety and depression, τ = .346 and τ = .363, a moderate and positive correlation between family-to-work conflict (FWC) with anxiety and depression; τ = .263 and τ = .281. The correlation found in this study was consistent with several previous research. Conclusion: The correlation results indicated that work-family conflict is positively correlated with mental health.
