Abstract

Introduction: Being compassionate is an important quality that nurses required to have to deliver quality care towards patient. However, as a result of caring too much towards patient and their condition, nurses developed Compassion fatigue (CF) a negative consequence, comprises of element of Secondary traumatic stress (STS) when nurses are exposed too much on patient’s traumatic condition and slowly it accumulates a part of burnout (BO) making nurses exhausted mentally and physically and in overtime resulting them in having difficulty to do their job and lead to reduce in nurse’s retention. It is said that for a nurses to overcome such negativity, one must have Compassion satisfaction (CS). It is a feeling of satisfaction in their ability to help other and satisfaction in knowing that they have done their best to help other. Critical area nurse especially, provide care for those who are in critical state or terminally ill, thus it is acknowledge that they are exposed more towards CF (Henson,2019). Objective: Therefore, our objective is to identify the relationship between Compassion Fatigue (CF) and Compassion Satisfaction (CS) among the critical area nurses in a tertiary hospital Method, a cross – sectional study design with stratified random sampling method (Critical are nurses) are used in this study. Self-Administered questionnaire of the Professional Quality of Life (ProQol): Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction 2009 are adopted for this study. Later, the Data obtained will be analyzed using the Statistical Analysis Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 Descriptive analysis such as frequency, mean, and standard deviation was used to describe the sociodemographic characteristic and scoring for Compassion Fatigue (CF), burnout and Compassion satisfaction (CS). Pearson Correlation will be used to identify the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables. P<0.05 was considered as a statistically significant. Results: The findings in this study showed from the total of 154 participants, the mean age of participants was 29.097 years. A total of 121 (78.9%) of the participant ethnicity was Malay making them the majority of our participant. A total of 140 participants (90.9%) working grade 0f U29. Most of them (N= 139,90.3%) holds diploma certificates and have a mean of 4. 73 working experiences. A total of 122 participant (79.2%) are from Emergency department., a total of 17 (11%) participant are from intensive unit and 15 ( 9.7%) are from Coronary care Unit. From the scoring, it shows Secondary Traumatic stress, burnout and Compassion Satisfaction scored in moderate level, however mean score of Compassion satisfaction shows an average 30.05 higher compared to mean average score of elements of secondary traumatic stress 29.85 and burnout and 26.55. Relationship were identified between the independent variables the compassion Satisfaction with the secondary traumatic stress(r= 0.385, p=0.00) and between Compassion satisfaction and burnout (r= o.348, p= 0.00) Conclusion: : the finding from this research provides in depth knowledge and information for the higher management of nurses and other respectable nurses and its institution on the significant of this phenomena in Malaysia. It is crucial towards the nursing profession since nurse are to ensure quality care delivery and produce a good wellbeing to the patient and as well the wellbeing of the nurses themselves.
