Abstract

Background: During this pandemic COVID-19 situation, Frontliners are the individual’s held responsibility in confronting the COVID-19. This includes nurses who actively involved in controlling and treating intervention and keep working despite the pandemic situation. Because of their responsibility, they are exposed to risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2. This exposure directly becoming a factor of fear of COVID-19 and also giving impact on their mental health status. Objectives: This study is aim to investigate the association between mental health status and fear of COVID-19 status among nurses as Frontliners in Selangor. Method: The study is quantitative study. This study conducted to nurses as frontliners who Currently involve in frontline workers COVID-19 as a nurse in Selangor with total of targeted total of 268 participant. The questionnaires DASS-21, which is used to assess mental health, and FCV-19S, which is used to assess the amount of fear of COVID-19, were used. This study used convenience sampling method as sampling method. The data were collected in May 2021 until July 2021 through online questionnaires. The data collected being analyses as descriptive analysis which measured by mean and standard deviation and, frequency and percentage will be used and, inferential parametric statistic which measured by independent t-test, Pearson correlation and One-Way Independent ANOVA will be used. Confidence level are set at 90 % and margin of error of 5%. Result: The result state from 270 number of the respondent consists of average 28-year-old with average 6 years of working experience. With majority of 78.1% of female nurses and the highest number of working units is medical unit which is 21.5%. Depression category stated cumulative of 44.5% of the severe and very severe category. Anxiety category stated cumulatively 62.6% having severe and very severe of anxiety. Stress category reveals 31.5% are in severe and very severe category. Fear of COVID-19 scale (FCV-19S) scoring reveal that averagely respondent score 26 which indicate the higher score of fear of COVID-19. there were significant association between depression with work unit (p= 0.002), anxiety with work unit (p= 0.005), and stress with work unit (p= 0.003). Other sociodemographic data shows there is no significant relationship with depression, anxiety and stress. There also significant association between work unit with fear of COVID-19 (p= 0.001). There were significant association between depression, with fear of COVID-19 (p= 0.002), significant association between anxiety with fear of COVID-19 (p= 0.001) and significant association between stress with fear of COVID-19 (p= 0.003). Conclusion: Most of the Nurses in Selangor have low mental health condition indicate by high score of DASS-21, shows significant relationship with high of fear of COVID-19. Further intervention by authorities is advised to be done to improve mental health of nurses in Selangor.
