Abstract

Background: COVID-19, a coronavirus disease that is highly contagious caused by SARS-CoV-2 has turned into a global pandemic. Along with the COVID-19 outbreak, the situation leads to a massive impact on the health care system such as full intensive care wards, overfilled emergency department and excessive hours of working, as a high number of cases reported, this has greatly escalated the amount of work and psychological pressures for nurses. Psychological stress caused by increased workload and fear of own safety and health greatly affect the quality of sleep among nurses. Objectives: The general objective of the study is to determine the perceived stress level and sleep quality among nurses during COVID-19 in Serdang Hospital, Selangor. The specific objectives includes: To determine socio-demographic factors to determine perceived stress level among nurses, to determine sleep quality among nurses, and to determine the association between socio-demographic with perceived stress level and sleep quality among nurses. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study with a convenient sampling technique is used. The data will be collected online from March to May 2021 among nurses in Serdang Hospital, Selangor using validated Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) by Sheldon Chen and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) by Buysse DJ. The questionnaire will be disseminated and share online using Google Form. Hence, the data collected will be analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Determining perceived stress level and sleep quality among nurses will be analyzed using Pearson correlation, Independent t-test, and one-way independent ANOVA according to the data. Results: A total of 60 nurses had involved in the study. The findings in this study showed the mean ± SD for the total score of PSS-10 is 21.45 ± SD 5.56 while the mean ± SD for the total score of PSQI is 7.33 ± SD 2.43. Analysis done had revealed a significant relationship between gender (p=0.017), ethnicity (p=0.002), and religion (p=0.002) with perceived stress among nurses. The analysis also revealed there is a significant relationship between perceived stress level and sleep quality among nurses (p=0.000). Meanwhile, there is no significant relationship between socio-demographic factors with sleep quality. Conclusion: Perceived stress levels were found to significantly affect the sleep quality among nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, interventions, clinical management, effective stress coping system, and adequate sleep satisfaction should be taken among healthcare workers, especially nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak which will further improve the holistic care for the patients.
