Abstract
Introduction: The prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) has increased year by year. The disorder that results from work related activities knows as Work- related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). According to statistic from DOSH (2019), WMSDs ranked as second highest occupational disease with 338 confirmed cases. MSDs is the main focus and become a concern as it can result severe injury and will affect the quality of life. Security guards’ occupation comprise of many tasks that need prolong standing and sitting, awkward posture, forceful exertion and they also exposed to environmental factors such as extreme temperature. Therefore, there is a need to know the association of ergonomics risk factors with the prevalence of WMSDs among security guards. Objectives: The aims of this study are to determine the prevalence of WMSDs among security guards as well as to determine the significant association between ergonomics risk factors and the prevalence of WMSDs among security guards in Kedah. Methodology: This study is a cross-sectional study that use purposive sampling in obtaining the participants from security guards in Kedah. A total of 367 security guards will be selected. The instrumentation that will be used for this study is questionnaire. The respondents will be given self-administered questionnaire that was adapted and modified from the previous study to achieve the objectives of this study and Nordic musculoskeletal disorders questionnaires also been used to determine the prevalence of WMSDs among security guards. Result and discussion: In this study, it found that the prevalence of WMSDs among security guards was 74.1% and the highest WMSDs reported for the past 12-months by body parts was upper back (83.7%) followed by lower back (81.5%), neck (73.8%) and hips (72.5%) respectively. Next, in this study was found that there were few ergonomics risk factors that significantly associated with WMSDs at p<0.05 such as prolonged sitting (OR=4.1), prolonged standing (OR=3.8), awkward posture (OR=2.7) and high temperature (OR=1.1). Conclusion: There is significant twelve-months prevalence of WMSDs among security guards which 74.1% and the significant ergonomics risk factors that exposed by the security guards were stationary positions, awkward posture and high temperature. Keywords: musculoskeletal disorders, work-related musculoskeletal disorders, ergonomics risk factor, security guards, Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire.
