Abstract
Background: Hypertension (HPT) is the leading treatable risk factor for cardiovascular disease mortality as it has been widely reported in various regions ofthe world. Increased blood pressure levels during childhood strongly predict HPT in young adulthood. Among adolescents and young adults; elevated blood pressure is also associated with the presence of early atherosclerotic lesions. Objective: To identify the prevalence and the associated factors of hypertension among secondary school students aged 12-17 in Batang Padang District, Perak. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 2131 secondary school students. Self administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on socio demography, smoking status and physical activity level. Height, weight and blood pressure were taken and Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. The response rate was 87.1 %. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 21. Result: Out of 1857 respondents, 20.0% of them had hypertension. By using Chi-Square Test, it was shown that there were significant association between hypertension with gender, ethnicity, smoking status and nutritional status (p<0.05).
