Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 has become a threat in which become a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) since the outbreak has started in Wuhan, China (The Lancet, 2020). By the end 2021, schools have started to reopen in the new normal and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are instilled to control outbreak. However, even with the present SOPs, positive COVID-19 cases are still occurring. The compliance to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) would ensure the effectiveness in controlling the spread of COVID-19. The Knowledge, Attitude and Practice would help in the determination of the understanding, behaviour, or belief and necessary practices for COVID-19 among the school management. Objectives: The study identified determinant factors of the knowledge, attitude and practice towards COVID-19 SOP compliance and determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice among school managements in Central Selangor districts. Methodology: Overall, 249 respondents of school managements from schools in Petaling, Gombak and Klang were sampled using multistage sampling method. The respondents were given a self- administered questionnaire designed to elicit sociodemographic, occupational and lifestyle information and knowledge, attitude and practice towards COVID-19 SOP compliance. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One Way Anova, Pearson correlation and logistic regression were used in the study. Results and Discussion: The study participants had high overall knowledge, attitude and practice of COVID-19 SOP compliance. The knowledge about COVID-19 has the highest mean score (4.96 ± 0.226). There was a significant mean difference between KAP and school district, source of COVID-19 knowledge; social media, handled infectious disease program, exposed to COVID-19, stress and trouble sleeping (p<0.05). The correlation between knowledge and attitude with practice showed significant relationship with value of (r=0.240, p<0.001) and (r=0.190, p=0.003) respectively. Two variables were the predictor of higher practice from the multivariable logistic regression which were experience in handling infectious disease cases (OR=3.649, 95% CI 1.604 to 8.305) and knowledge OR=4.828, 95% CI 1.233 to 18.989). Conclusion: School management in Petaling, Gombak and Klang had high level of knowledge, appropriate practice and positive behaviour concerning COVID-19, implying that school management complies with the SOPs provided by the Malaysian government. However, school management holds a responsibility of controlling the potential outbreak of COVID-19 at schools and social media, knowledge, attitude, and experience in handling infectious disease cases that can influence the practice of COVID-19 SOP compliance.
