Abstract
Introduction: In recent years, urban parks have been used as part of a number of efforts to reduce air pollution by focusing on environmental factors. However, this study focuses on the information on air pollution obtained from a social survey in which park users were evaluated on their perceptions of air quality in Putrajaya's urban parks. It emphasises the critical need for a better understanding of the public's perception of the risks posed by air pollution in urban parks. Objective: This study aims to determine the park user’s perception of air quality and its health risks in Putrajaya urban park. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study that uses snowball sampling to recruit the respondents for this study. The respondents consist of the Putrajaya urban park visitors, where six urban parks are randomly selected to represent the whole urban park in Putrajaya. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the respondents in order to collect data on socio-demographic, air quality perception and health risks perception (N=234). The questionnaire has been tested for reliability and it was used to obtain respondent’s information on socio-demographic, visitation profiles, previous experiences and knowledge of park users, air quality perception and health risks perception. Result and Discussion: The highest frequency (percentage) of park users were 102 (43.6%), aged 21-30 years old, 176 (75.2%) female, 127 (54.3%) Malay, 144 (61.5%) single, 89 (38.0%) have the highest level of education in bachelor’s degree and 111 (47.4%) from middle income (RM4,850 - RM10,959). Of all participants, 193 (82.5%) have a good perception of air quality and 41 (17.5%) have poor perception. For the perception of the health risks, 158(67.5%) have good perception while 76 (32.5%) have poor perception. There was a significant association between gender and higher education level with knowledge (p=0.040) and (p=0.007) respectively. Conclusion: Most park users had a good perception level of air quality and its health risks. Among all the socio-demographic variables considered, only gender and a higher level of education affect park users' perception of air quality and health risks. Social determinants in air quality perceptions can help policymakers distribute environmental awareness and mitigate air pollution . Keywords: Air Quality, Perception, Health Risks, Urban Park
