Abstract
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease due to newly discovered coronavirus from the pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, China in December 2019. COVID-19 caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS)-CoV-2 is the first disease caused by a coronavirus to be declared pandemic by the World Health Organization(WHO) (Heet. al., 2020). The outbreak is likely to have started from a zoonotic transmission event associated with a large seafood market that also traded in live exotic animals, it soon became clear that efficient person-to-person transmission was also occurring (Li, et al., 2020). A person can become infected from respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Furthermore, others can also be infected by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, and then by touching their mouth, nose, or eyes. 54.3% of those infected with COVID-19 are male with a median age of 56 years (Wang et al., 2020) To date, most COVID-19 infected patients have developed mild symptoms such as dry cough, sore throat, and fever. The majority of cases have spontaneously resolved. However, some have developed various fatal complications including organ failure, septic shock, pulmonary oedema, severe pneumonia, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) (Chen et al., 2020). Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health in Malaysia (Shanmugam, Juhari, Nair, Ken, & Guan, 2020). Facemasks and similar barriers to prevent respiratory illness such as COVID-19 (Brainard, Jones, Lake, Hooper, & Hunter, 2020). In March 2020, Malaysia recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia with more than 35% of new COVID-19 cases linked to the Sri Petaling gathering, a Moslem missionary movement attended by more than 19 000 people of different nationalities in Kuala Lumpur. From this cluster, 1701 samples have been tested positive out of 21 920 tests carried out (Che, Atan, Abdul, Safuan, & Sabreena, 2020). To control the spread of infection, the Malaysian government decided to implement a nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) effective from 18 March 2020. Thus, it is really important to determine the level of knowledge, 6 attitude and practice on COVID-19 among Malaysian especially in the medical and healthcare field. Knowledge, attitude and practice on COVID-19 prevention among people in Malaysia were influenced by many factors, including socio-demographic factors. Recent studies found that the increased communication surrounding the spread of this disease on social communication channels has captivated the public and increased general awareness on the disease (Hanafiah & Da, 2020). Based on the study that was conducted among the Chinese residents in Hubei, China, the author reported that most of the residents there were highly knowledgeable, had optimistic attitudes and practised strict precaution regarding the COVID-19 (Zhong BL et al., 2020). Azlan et al. (2020) reported that Malaysians had a high knowledge, positive attitude and good practice due consistent messaging from the government and/ or health authorities regarding COVID-19 that improved these variables. However, not much study and research has been conducted to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice on COVID-19 prevention among the public especially university students and there is the fact that the both itself does influence the transmission of COVID-19. Therefore, this research conducted particularly in University settings which consist of medical students. Medical students are used as the sample population for this study and it does not represent the public population.
