Abstract
Introduction: Youth represented a significant part of the workforce globally, especially in Malaysia. Despite its significance in the labour force, the impact of work-related psychosocial risk factors on the mental health symptoms of working youth during the COVID-19 Pandemic was not well studied. Objectives: To identify the work-related psychosocial risk factors and their association with mental health symptoms during the COVID-19 Pandemic among working youth in Malaysia especially in Klang Valley. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among working youth in Klang Valley. Work-related psychosocial risk factors and mental health symptoms were measured using a self-administered questionnaire modified from Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire version three (COPSOQ-III) and Generalised Anxiety Syndrome -7 (GAD-7). Results and Discussion: A total of 307 working youth participated in the study. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, most of the respondents had a low level of workplace bullying, moderate workload, workpace and work-life conflict, high level of social support from supervisor, social support from colleagues and job insecurity. Most respondents also experienced a moderate level of all studied mental health symptoms. Most work-related psychosocial risk factors were positively correlated to mental health symptoms. Workload, work-pace, job insecurity, work-life conflict and workplace bullying predicted at least one studied mental health symptom. Monthly income and marital status were found to reduce the risk of burnout and depressive symptoms, respectively, while education level increases burnout risk. Conclusion: The study generates contexts to respond to the research gap in the context of work-related psychosocial risk factors and mental health symptoms among working youth. Keywords: Work-related psychosocial risk factors, Mental health symptoms, Occupational health, Working youth
