Abstract

Background: The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has entirely halted the educational process, hence shifting from face-to-face classroom teaching to electronic learning (e-learning). Virtual mediums were applied for undergraduate nursing students to cope with educational loss that occurred when universities remained closed due to Movement Control Order (MCO). The attitude on the practice of e-learning among undergraduate nursing students may influence their performance in the learning process. Objective: To determine the attitude on the practice of e-learning among undergraduate nursing students in public universities in Malaysia during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study’s design is a cross-sectional study. A convenient sampling method were used to recruit undergraduate nursing students from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Puncak Alam. The questionnaire comprises two parts which were socio-demographic and attitude on the practice of e-learning. Data Analysis: SPSS version 27.0 was used for data entry and analysis. Descriptive analysis, independent T-test and One-way independent ANOVA were used to evaluate the resulting data. Results: A total of 142 respondents had participated in the study. The findings in this study showed that the total mean score is 3.64 (SD=0.51) which indicated for favorable attitude on the practice of e-learning. Besides, 46.5% (66) had favorable attitude, 34.5% (49) had unfavorable attitude and 19% (27) had neutral attitude. The analysis shows there is significant association between socio-demographic characteristics (gender, residence, and gadgets/devices used in e-learning) with attitude on the practice of e-learning (p<0.05) but none for age, year of study, monthly family income (RM), and gadgets/devices used in e-learning (p>0.05). Conclusion: The result obtained in this study showed that majority respondents had favorable attitude on the practice of e-learning during this pandemic. Hence, to improve the clinical skills, knowledge, and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students for the preparedness of the COVID-19 pandemic, appropriate e-learning strategies must be implemented. Keywords: attitude, e-learning, undergraduate, nursing, COVID-19
