Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular disease has affected a million people who die with sudden cardiac arrest every year worldwide which can happen suddenly even in the university. This situation is attributed to the limitation of knowledge regarding performing the right techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in part of Basic Life Support (BLS) training. Understanding BLS may influence the percentage of survival rate of the cardiac arrested victim by providing knowledge of first-line treatment. Objective: To investigate the association between level of knowledge of CPR, attitude, and perception towards BLS training among students and staff in a public university. Method: This study’s design is a cross-sectional study. A self-administered online survey was used in this study. The questionnaire has been distributed through an online platform which is through email (Gmail) and WhatsApp. The questionnaire comprises three parts which are the socio-demographic characteristic of the respondents’, level of knowledge of CPR, and attitude and perception toward BLS. Data Analysis: SPSS version 28 is used for data entry and analysis. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, independent t-test, and One-way independent ANOVA were used to evaluate the resulting data. Results: A total of 103 respondents had participated in the study. The findings in this study showed that the mean ± SD for a total score of knowledge of CPR is 7.48 ± 3.02 while the mean ± SD for a total score of attitudes towards adult CPR is 7.12 ± 1.64. There were no respondents that passed the score of CPR knowledge which is 84% (16 out of 20) for the questions according to American Academy of Paediatrics and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. The results show all the respondent have poor level of knowledge regarding CPR and perception on BLS but have high the attitude towards BLS training. Moreover, the analysis done had revealed that there is significant association between socio-demographic characteristics (Age (p=0.03), Faculty or course Information (P=0.018), estimation date of last CPR course certification (P=0.015)) with knowledge. The analysis also showed a significant relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of the highest level of education (p= 0.011) with attitude and perception of BLS. Lastly, there is no significant association between level of CPR knowledge and attitude and perception of BLS. Conclusion: Notably, knowledge regarding CPR was low and limited, nevertheless the attitude and perception is high among the students and staff in a public university. There is a need for public health to empower dissemination of information to give them opportunities to obtain BLS training. Hence, the exposure of important knowledge and practice of CPR in future will help increase the awareness and reduce the fear regarding practicing of CPR.
