Abstract

Introduction: Sleep quality is determined by the satisfaction when waking up and feeling refreshed. Nowadays, student experience poor sleep because of the stress and burden of work. Sleep quality has a relationship with Night Eating Syndrome where students tend to eat to fall back asleep after waking up in the middle of the night. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and Night Eating Syndrome among university students. Objective: To determine the association between Sleep Quality and Night Eating Syndrome among students in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 84 respondents from students in Universiti Putra Malaysia. A self-administered online survey was used in this study. The questionnaire comprises three parts which were socio-demographic, sleep quality assessment and Night Eating Question (NEQ). SPSS version 26.0 is used for data entry and analysis. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, independent t-test and One-way independent ANOVA were used to evaluate the resulting data. Result: The mean age of the respondents was 22.76 ± 1.093 years old, 42.9% (36) were male, 57.1% (48) were female, 78.6% (66) were Malay, 15.5% (13) were Chinese and 3.6% (3) were Indian and 2.4% (2) others ethnic. About 46.4% (39) of the respondent were having good sleep while 53.46% (45) having poor sleep. Besides, 53.6% (46) had Night Eating Syndrome, 46.4% (39) absent of Night Eating Syndrome. The result showed there was significant relationship between sleep quality and Night Eating Syndrome (p=0.032). Meanwhile, the result showed that socio-demographic characteristics that was significant association was gender with sleep quality and Night Eating Syndrome (p=0.050). Conclusion: The result obtained in this study showed that most of respondents had poor sleep and Night Eating Syndrome. As a result, it was critical to overcome this issue. Thus, we can specify our intervention towards people that having Night Eating Syndrome and improved quality of sleep among university students.
