Abstract
Background: Insulin therapy is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for hospitalised inpatients or outpatients of the endocrinology department. Insulin therapy can also be one of the most harmful drugs if used inappropriately. Therefore, nurses play a vital role because they are always the first to approach people looking for information about managing diabetes. Nurses with inadequate knowledge and attitude will not only compromise patients’ outcomes but also increase stress and affects the institution’s reputation. Therefore, nurses need to be knowledgeable about insulin injection and have a positive attitude in order to ensure that the patients receive the proper insulin therapy from the nurses and prevent any adverse outcomes. Consequently, it can also improve the survival rate and quality of life of the patients. Objective: To study the knowledge and attitude towards insulin therapy among nurses in Serdang Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia. Method: A cross-sectional study by using convenient sampling method was conducted in Serdang Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia. Data were collected through Google Form. The questionnaire comprises three parts which includes socio-demographic, knowledge and attitude towards insulin therapy. Data Analysis: SPSS version 26.0 is used for data entry and analysis. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, independent t-test and One-way independent ANOVA employed for data analysis. Result and Discussion: A total of 120 respondents participated in the study. The findings in this study showed that a total score of knowledge about insulin therapy with the mean of 12.08 ± 2.71 while the mean for a total score of attitude towards is 24.34 ± 3.25. The results showed a significant association between age (p=0.046) and current working location (p=0.0001) with knowledge about insulin therapy. The result also demonstrated that there is a significant relationship between the nurses who attended in service diabetes education courses with attitude towards insulin therapy (p=0.050). Meanwhile, the result shows there is a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude towards insulin therapy (p=0.0001). Conclusion: The result obtained in this study showed that the majority of respondents had good knowledge and attitude towards insulin therapy. Thus, it is critical to increase the knowledge and awareness of insulin therapy as it can help the nurses to be more vigilant and enhance their attitude towards insulin therapy.
