Abstract

Introduction: Internet addiction has become a serious public health problem nowadays as the internet grows rapidly throughout the globe and mostly affects the younger generations especially university students. According to Tateno et al (2016), 59.6% of college students were found to have possible internet addiction and 3.7% of them had severe internet addiction. Objective: To study the prevalence, student’s characteristics, and quality of life among undergraduate students with internet addiction during movement control order (MCO), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Materials and Method: A cross sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Respondents’ drive data collection was used in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was produced in Google form and was distributed to each faculty using WhatsApp and emails. Results: Results showed that the prevalence for internet addiction was 71.9% with 43.9%, 26.1% and 1.9% for mild, moderate and severe internet addiction respectively during movement control order. Internet addiction was significantly associated with ethnicity (p=0.031), duration of internet use during weekends (hours per day)(p=0.014), and purpose of internet use for education (p=0.001),entertainment (p=0.042), and pornography (p=0.009). Moreover, quality of life of students based on the physical and psychological were significantly inversely correlated with internet addiction (r= -0.354, -0.247). Conclusion: High prevalence of internet addiction among respondents and they were correlated with lower physical and psychological domain of quality of life. Health education to the undergraduate students need to be conducted to reduce the internet addiction specially to reduce usage during weekends and to limit to educational purposes.
