Abstract

Introduction: Due to strict action by the government, schools are allowed to reopen again in condition they need to comply with the Standard Operating Procedures enforced by government. However, from January 1 until April 20, 2021 there are about 5000 COVID-19 cases related to 83 clusters of education. To assure that the schools comply with the SOPs, understanding the COVID-19 basic information, transmissions and symptoms is essential. To ensure that the public’s understanding on Covid-19 in influencing the success of preventing its transmission, a reliable tool has been used which is Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) study. Objective: To identify the determinant factors of knowledge, attitude and practice towards COVID 19 SOP compliance among school administrators and teacherss in Southern Selangor districts (Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Sepang) and Putrajaya. Methodology: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among the school administrators and teachers which involved 251 respondents consists of teachers and school administrators. The survey instrument consisted of socio-demographic characteristics, 25 items on knowledge, 10 items on attitudes and 18 items on practices, adapted from a previous study. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s correlation and linear regression were utilized to measure all the variables. Results and Discussion: The overall correct rate of the knowledge item was 98.0%. For attitude and practice, it also shown that majority of the respondents (97.6%) had positive attitudes toward the successful control of COVID- 19 and 96.4% of the respondents had good practice towards COVID-19 preventive measures. There is also significant association between both knowledge and attitude with practice. Knowledge scores significantly differed (P < 0.05) across races, monthly income, school location, exposed to food poisoning at school and experienced a lot of stress in daily life. Attitude scores were significantly different between races and school location (P < 0.05), whereas practice scores varied significantly across current position at school, exposed to TB at school and smoking (P < 0.05). Results from multiple linear regression indicated that good practice scores were significantly associated with teachers and positive attitude (P < 0.05), whereas poor preventive measures were associated with people that smoking. Conclusion: This study concludes that respondents had good knowledge, positive attitude and good practice towards COVID-19 preventive measures. Although the findings are encouraging, it is recommended that school administrators and teachers continue to improve its KAP in the battle against COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases so that school will be the safest place for the children as well as staffs despite any occurrence of disease. This study also concluded that race, monthly income, respondents’ school location, exposed to infectious disease cases at school, current position and smoking were the determinant factors of KAP towards COVID- 19.
