Abstract

Introduction: Stress and poor sleep quality had been a significant problem globally. However, there were inadequate insight on the sleep quality among nursing students in Malaysia. Considering their erratic work hours from practical, heavy academic workloads and academic performance, they were susceptible to experiencing stress and poor sleep quality which lead to poor academic performance, poor health behaviours affecting sleep quality while poor sleep quality would lead to impaired cognitive functioning and decrease in quality of life. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the predictors associated with poor sleep quality among nursing students in Malaysia. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among nursing students in Malaysia. This study utilized online questionnaire which consists of five sections including socio-demographic background, academic performance, lifestyle factors, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: A total of 339 nursing students participate in this study. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 72.9%. Based on Chi-Square result, there was a significant association between poor sleep quality and credit hour taken (χ2=6.416, p=0.011), caffeine intake (χ2=9.684, p=0.002) and total stress score (χ2=15.841, p<0.001). From multiple logistic regression, there were only 2 predictors found which were caffeine intake (OR=0.354, 95% CI=0.172, 0.732, p=0.005) and total stress score (OR=9.542, 95% CI=2.640, 34.488, p=0.001). Discussion: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was not directly comparable to local studies due to different population which was medical students. Also, it was higher compared to international studies. Furthermore, there was a possibility that the respondents’ stress level and sleep quality could had been exacerbated by covid-19 situation. Conclusion: The results showed that majority of nursing students had poor sleep quality. The authority must conduct intervention program to improve the sleep quality of nursing students in Malaysia.
