Abstract
Introduction: Coronavirus (COVID-19) is the current pandemic that has been affecting many lives worldwide. The virus that has been causing COVID-19 is from the same family of viruses that cause Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Many countries are affected by this illness and the rate of cases and deaths are increasing day by day. Healthcare workers are adapting into the new way of working and treating patients. Hospitals and screening centers for COVID-19 are opened to ensure the accessibility of patients to get screened and treated. Aim: This study aimed to assess the level of awareness and preparedness of general practitioners during Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It also aimed to evaluate the association between the level of awareness and preparedness of general practitioners in Klang Valley with sociodemographic factors and working experience. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving general practitioners from private healthcare institutions in Klang Valley was conducted. Self-administered online questionnaires were distributed via proxies to each respondent consisting of 3 sections, namely general information, assessment of preparedness of general practitioners and assessment of awareness of general practitioners. Data was analysed using IBM SPSS version 25.0. The 1 17 August 2020, Version 2 non-parametric Fishers’ Exact Test was used to test the association between age, gender, race and working experience with the level of awareness and preparedness of general practitioners when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Result: Majority of respondents were Malay, male and around 40-49 years old. Working experience during an endemic has a significant association with the level of awareness of COVID-19 among general practitioners in Klang Valley. On the contrary, age, gender, ethnicity and working experience during epidemic and pandemic are not significantly associated with the level of awareness and preparedness of COVID-19. Conclusion: This research revealed that working experience during an endemic has a significant association with the level of awareness of COVID-19 among general practitioners in Klang Valley. This study may serve as a knowledge to plan and prepare for future pandemic. 2
