Abstract
Background: Obesity is rising globally and is associated with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Malaysia has the highest rate of obesity and overweight among Asian countries with 64% of male and 65% of female population being either obese or overweight. Most of the cases among adults and students. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine factors associated with body mass index among undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the body weight status of 240 undergraduate students aged from 20 to 24 years in Universiti Putra Malaysia. The associations between body mass index and socio demographics factors, physical activity and dietary intake were assessed. Anthropometric factors were measured. Chi-square, and Pearson’s Moment Product Correlation tests were used for data analysis to assess the associations. Results: From a total of 240 undergraduate students including 180 females (75%) and 60 males (25%) with a mean age of 22.5 ± 1.17 years were subjects in this study. There were statistically significant associations were observed between gender (P = 0.001), ethnicity (P= 0.001), age (P= 0.008), physical activity (P = 0.003), protein (P = 0.001), carbohydrate (P = 0.041), fat (P = 0.001), and body mass index. Conclusion: There were significant association between socio-demographic factors, dietary intake and physical activity with body mass index status of the undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia. To treat overweight youths, programs should focus on increased physical activity along with intensive counseling and behavioral programming.
