Abstract
Introduction: The rate of cesarean delivery section that being performed has been increasing, in both low and high risk women. It was across all ages, races and ethnicities. The excessive use of cesarean delivery in low-risk woman will exposed both the baby and the mother to more harms than the benefits. Objective: To identify the risk factors for cesarean section among primigravida patient at Hospital Serdang. Methods: A hospital based case-control study was carried out. It involved 130 primigravida patients that undergo vaginal delivery section (controls) and 130 primigravida patients that undergo cesarean delivery section (cases) at the labor ward of Hospital Serdang from January until June 2013. The period of data collection used around three weeks. A proforma was used and it was completely filled up. Results: Majority of the cases was Malaysian (86.9%) and mostly was from Malay ethnic group (75.4%). Citizenship, gestational age, hypertension status and fetal weight had a significant relationship with mode of delivery. Majority ofboth mother and baby from both type of delivery had shown no complications after delivery. Hypertension status, gestational age and fetus weight were significant affected the primigravida mothers prone to assign to cesarean delivery section upon arrival to labor. Conclusion: Those patients that with any type of hypertension, over the expected delivery date and with heavy fetus weight will have higher chances to undergo caesarean delivery. There are more maternal and neonatal complications for those that undergo caesarean delivery section than those that undergo vaginal delivery section. Key Words: Cesarean delivery, risk factors, primigravida, labor room, complications
