Abstract
Chronotype is the behavioral manifestation of circadian rhythmicity in an individual which usually could be categorized under three categories, namely morning-types, intermediate-types and evening-types. Evidence is emerging suggesting health problem and shift work is associated with chronotype, where firefighters are among those who involve in shift work. Hence, this cross-sectional study aimed to compare nutritional status and blood pressure between different human chronotypes among firefighters in Selangor. A total of 78 respondents aged 19 to 52 years (M=30.83 years, SD=7.61) from six randomly selected fire and rescue department branches in Selangor participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire including information on sociodemographic background and chronotype was completed by the respondents. Chronotype was assessed by using Horne and Östberg's Morningness–eveningness Questionnaire. Dietary behaviour was assessed by using Eating Behaviours Questionnaire and a two-day 24-hour dietary recall. Body weight, height, waist circumference, body fat percentage and blood pressure were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Results showed that 69.2% of the firefighters were of intermediate-types followed by morning-types (30.8%) and none for evening-types. Sociodemographic characteristics, BMI, waist circumference, percentage of body fat, blood pressure level and dietary behaviour were found to be not significantly different between chronotypes. On a side note, this study provides an insight to the presence of high prevalence of hypertension (43.7%), overweight and obesity (53.8%), high body fat percentage (36.5%) among firefighters as well as poor dietary intake reflecting from the high prevalence of meal skipping and inadequate nutrient intake among these rescuers. In conclusion, this study has identified several health concerns that should be addressed in the development of interventions to improve quality of life among firefighter
