Abstract
Introduction Cigarette smoke exposure among pregnant women may lead to poor perinatal outcomes. Effects of passive smoking on perinatal outcome include sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, small-for-gestation baby, preterm delivery, congenital anomaly and reduced lung function. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge on perinatal outcome secondary to smoking among husbands who accompany their wives for visits at the antenatal clinics in Hospital Serdang and Klinik Kesihatan Seri Kembangan 2013. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted among husbands who accompanied their wives 1st for visits at antenatal clinics during July until 31 st July 2013. A pretested questionnaire detailing sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge on perinatal outcomes caused by passive smoking was given to respondents. The associations were analysed by using Chi Square Test and Fisher's Exact Test. Results Malays (x 2= 4.424, P = 0.035) were more likely to smoke than non-malays. Husbands from low income family (x 2= 9.249, P = 0.002) showed the higher chance to smoke. However, age, religion, educational level, and residential area were not significantly associated with smoking status of the husbands. There was significant association between knowledge on perinatal outcomes caused by passive smoking with smoking status of the husbands (x2 = 5.215, P = 0.022). The higher the score on effects of perinatal outcomes due to passive smoking obtained by husbands, the less likely they smoke. Conclusion This study indicated that there was association between knowledge on perinatal outcomes caused by passive smoking with smoking status of the husbands.
