Abstract
Background: In Malaysia, cancer of the cervix was the third most common cancer among women, after breast cancer and colorectal cancer even though the vaccine towards the HPV have been introduced by the Ministry of Health. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practise of HPV vaccination among medical students of UPM. Method: This study was conducted from March 2013 to August 2013. Adopted validated questionnaires were completed by UPM medical students (n=389). Results: The results showed that majority of the students have good knowledge and showed good attitude towards HPV vaccination. However, most of the students showed poor practise (n=196). Only some of the students had been vaccinated (37.8%) and most of the vaccinated students showed good practise towards HPV vaccination. Among the unvaccinated students (62.2%), most of them stated that they were still unsure whether to get themselves vaccinated in the future. In comparing gender and attitude grades, there was no significant difference between male and female students. There were significant association between the mean rank for attitude scores and year of study. Conclusions: In conclusion, the medical students in UPM showed good knowledge level and good attitude towards HPV vaccination. However, many students have not been vaccinated and most of them were unsure about getting themselves vaccinated in the future. Therefore, more awareness campaigns and more affordable HPV vaccination services should be provided in universities.
