Abstract
Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease, and the joint that is commonly affected is the knee. For osteoarthritis of knees, total knee replacement (TKR) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the surgical and major advance in the treatment for this degenerative joint disease. Objective: To assess the knowledge and attitude towards treatment of osteoarthritis of knees among patients age 35 years old and above attending Orthopaedic Clinic in Hospital Serdang. Methodology: The questionnaires were distributed among 300 patients who attended Orthopaedic Clinic from Monday until Friday in July 2013 excluding public holidays, and who were available during data collection process. The questionnaire consisted of three sections; section A on socio-demographic information, section B to assess knowledge on knee OA, and section C to assess attitude towards TKR as treatment for knee OA. Score were given for both sections B and C, and the data analysis was performed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: 300 respondents were distributed according to socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, ethnicities, education levels and monthly income), score of knowledge on knee OA, and score of attitude towards TKR. 45.14% of respondents with poor knowledge had negative attitude while 63.6% respondents with good knowledge showed positive attitude towards TKR. The results showed ethnicities (p= 0.012), education levels (p= 0.003), and montWy income (p=0.012) had significant association with level of knowledge on knee OA. Meanwhile ethnicities (p= 0.005) and education levels (p= 0.002) had significant association with attitude towards TKR as treatment for knee OA. The results also showed the level of knowledge on knee OA was not significantly associated with attitude towards TKR as treatment for knee OA. Conclusion: This study revealed that respondents' knowledge on knee OA had no significant association with their attitude towards TKR as treatment for knee OA. Key Words: Knee osteoarthritis, total knee replacement, knowledge, attitude
