Abstract
Depletion of the ozone layer has increased the number of ultraviolet rays reaching the earth's surface. Repeated exposure to ultraviolet rays is estimated to be associated with 80% – 90% of skin cancers. The application of sunscreen protects the skin layer either by absorbing or blocking ultraviolet radiation. Undergraduate students are exposed to these damaging UV rays as they walk to classes and engage in various outdoor activities. Therefore, proper knowledge, attitude, and practice of sunscreen application and other health safety among undergraduate students are essential to prevent skin cancer. Objective: This study aims to determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice among undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) toward sunscreen application and health safety. Methodology: This cross-sectional survey was conducted online among undergraduate university students (18 years old and above) at the FHMS. Students from other faculties, postgraduates, and academic staff of UPM, were excluded from this study. The questionnaire consisted of 78 questions and was divided into four sections (A, B, C, and D). The questionnaire conducted is validated and accepted by the Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Research Ethics Committee (JKEUPM). The statistical analysis used was Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s Chi-Square, and a p-value of 0.05. Result: Total number of respondents was 322 (n = 322), the majority of the respondents were female, 179(55.6%), followed by male, 143 (44.4%). The average distribution of respondents from socio demography section was 20 years old (32.3%), ethnic Malays (67.4%), Doctor of Medicine program (30.3%), respondent’s years of study from year 1 (31.4%), and the average highest-level education for father was bachelor’s degree or equivalent while mother education was secondary high (SPM/STPM). The data showed the average knowledge of undergraduates of FMHS UPM had 26.81. This indicates that 302 (93.8%) respondents were a moderate level of knowledge and 20 (6.2%) was high knowledge of sunscreen application and health safety. Meanwhile, the average level of attitude amongst undergraduates was 42.86 . The data show that about 321 (99.7%) respondents had moderate attitudes and only 1 (0.3%) possessed low attitudes. The average score of practice among undergraduate students was 50.7%. This indicates that the level of practice score among respondents was equally (50% moderate and 50% high), respectively. Conclusion: The finding of this study demonstrated a satisfactory level of knowledge, attitude, and practice on sunscreen application and health safety among undergraduate students of FMHS, UPM.
