Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is one of the most important plantation crops that generate a generous income in Malaysia. Subterranean termites (Coptotermes curvignathus) are reported as the most damaging pest occurring in oil palm cultivated in peat soil. It feeds primarily on the apical meristem of both immature and mature palms. This causes huge loses to the plantation. In this study, fipronil and spinosad were introduced into rubberwood sawdust to apply as baits in the baiting systems. Baits were prepared in 1 mm size and 4 mm size. The studies showed that 0.01 mg a.i./L of fipronil introduced into 1 mm size of rubberwood sawdust were the most suitable baits to control the subterranean termites. Spinosad gave a repellent action during feeding, and thus was not suitable to be use as bait toxicant for the baiting system.
