Abstract

The ability of algae to manifest various biological properties have long been discovered. Kappaphycus alvarezii is one of the common species of red algae. This particular alga is widely farmed in Semporna, Sabah. They have showed effective antimicrobial activity against various human pathogens but not much is known against animal pathogens. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Kappaphycus alvarezii against feline skin microbiota. Five most common feline skin microbiota were tested against red algae namely Pasteurella sp, Staphylococcus sp, Streptococcus sp, Pseudomonas sp, and E. coli. There were two form of Kappaphycus alvarezii tested in this present study. Pure compound was obtained from fine grinded of the algae and extract form was obtained from hydrodistillation process. The antimicrobial activities of Kappaphycus alvarezii for pure compound were detected using agar well diffusion method whilst disk-diffusion method were performed for extract form. The result found that both pure and extract compound of Kappaphycus alvarezii does not shown zone of inhibition. The absence of the zone of inhibition indicated that the algae does not have antimicrobial properties. The findings were contradicted with previous study reported worldwide. The origin of the algae might be contributed into their biological properties. More microbiota need to be tested in the future study to determine which pathogen susceptible to Kappaphycus alvarezii.
