Abstract
Feline mammary tumour (FMT) is the third most common malignancy in cats. The tumour is characterised by its high metastatic potential, which prompts for an early and aggressive surgical intervention. The purpose of the study was to compare clinical outcomes in cats with FMT subjected to different surgical approaches. This study also aims to determine the factors affecting survival of cats with mammary gland tumours that underwent surgery. Medical records of 56 cats diagnosed with FMT that underwent mastectomy at University Veterinary Hospital, Universiti Putra Malaysia between 2008 and 2020 were reviewed. Patient data, signalment, clinical presentation, surgical treatment, and follow up evaluation were recorded and analyzed using SPSS. All the cats were female and the mean age at diagnosis was 9.96 years ( ± 4.3). The most common breeds were domestic short hair (53.6%), persian (32.1%), and domestic long hair (8.9%). Out of 35 neutered cats, 68% were neutered after 2 years of age, which showed higher likelihood of developing malignant mammary tumours (p=0.038). Mean survival times of cats with malignant and benign mammary gland tumours were 8.7 ± 7.4, and 41.3 ± 48.4 months respectively. Meanwhile, the survival rates for malignant cases at 1 and 2 years of diagnosis were 29.7% and 12.1% respectively. Seventeen cats (56.7%) with malignant mammary tumours developed pulmonary metastasis. Patients treated with aggressive surgical approach tend to have longer overall survival and disease free interval (DFI) than those treated with conservative surgery, but this finding was not statistically significant. Bilateral mastectomy was associated with higher post-operative complication rate (40%). Significant factor for survival time is mass ulceration (p= 0.013).
