Abstract
Feeding Raw Meat-Based Diets (RMBDs) to household dogs and cats is becoming a trend in many countries including Malaysia. However, many studies have shown that the presence of pathogens in the diets poses health risk to the pets as well as to public health. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate and determine the qualitative and quantitative aspects of bacteriological evaluation in selected Raw Meat-Based Diets (RMBDs) in Malaysia. A total of 30 samples were purchased from commercial and online sellers consisting 10 of each meat based including duck, beef and chicken. Routine bacterial culture, isolation and identification was performed as part of qualitative analysis together with coliform plate counts (CPC) for quantitative analysis. Out of thirty (30) samples, only two (2) were within the permissible range for CPC which is less than 1100 MPN/g according to the Malaysian Veterinary Standard Operating Procedure, Department of Veterinary Services, 2011. The remaining twenty-eight (28) samples exceeded the acceptable coliform count stated in the guideline. Ninety seven % (29/30) of the samples contained at least one bacteria type isolated and 77% (23/30) of the samples had three or more different types of bacteria being isolated. A total of 28 types of bacteria were being isolated and 75% (21/28) were gram negative bacteria. The five top pathogenic bacteria detected among 30 samples tested were Streptococcus viridans group (47%, n=14/30), Klebsiella pneumoniae (43%), Yersinia spp. (30%), Escherichia coli (23%) and coagulase positive Staphylococcus (17%), Pseudomonas fluorescens (17%) and Aeromonas spp. (17%). In conclusion, Raw Meat-Based Diets (RMBDs) used for companion animals in Malaysia contain pathogenic bacteria that may be harmful.
