Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify and determine the prevalence of common parasites in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) cultured in floating net-cages located in Pulau Ketam, Selangor, Malaysia. A total of ten mature Asian seabass were caught randomly using a dip-net from the net-cages. Each fish was weighed and their standard body length and total body length measured accordingly. Any abnormalities on the body and clinical signs were noted. Peripheral blood was obtained through the lateral approach of the caudal vein venipuncture. Thin blood films were made and stained with May-Grünwald and Giemsa stains prior to observation under a light microscope at 400x to 1000x magnifications. Fresh smears of skin scrapings of the fins and body surfaces,along with samples of gills were made to examine for the presence of ectoparasites under a light microscope at 400x to 1,000x magnifications. Gut content was also obtained from the posterior intestines and examined for endoparasites. Presence of ectoparasites were seen in 90% of the fish examined, whereby 60% of the ectoparasites were found in the gills and 40% were from the skin. Results showed that 60% of the ectoparasites found were monogenean Dactylogyrus sp., found in the gills. While Amyloodinium sp. and Caligus sp. copepod were observed in 40% of the gills and skin of the fish, respectively. Digenetic metasecariae and Henneguya sp. cysts were found in 30% and 10% of fish, respectively. No endoparasites were observed in the blood and intestine. In conclusion, a variety of common ectoparasites could be found in Asian seabass in which Dactylogyrus sp. showed the highest prevalence.
