Abstract
Project Paper (B.Sc (Nutrition and Community Health)) - Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2015. Parents play an important role in helping their children to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight status. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the relationships between familial factors (infant feeding practices, parental feeding practices, and family food environment) with body weight status among Malay preschoolers in Tabika Perpaduan in Tanah Merah, Kelantan. There were a total of 12 Tabika Perpaduan in Tanah Merah. All preschoolers in these 12 preschools were invited to participate in this study. A total of 258 Malay preschoolers (144 boys and 114 girls), with a mean age of 4.7±0.6 years participated in this study. Mothers completed a self-administered questionnaire on sociodemographic background, infant feeding practices. parental feeding practices, and family food environment. Weight and height of the prechoolers were measured by the researcher. Results showed that nearly one fourth of the preschoolers (22.5%) were wasted/thinness, 0.8% were severely wasted severely thinness, and 3.1 % were overweight. More boys (27.8%) were wasted/thinness as compared to girls (17.5%). About 14.4% of the preschoolers (13.9% boys and 14.9% girls) were severely underweight and underweight. About one in four of the preschoolers (25.5%) were severely stunted and stunted, with 22.2% in boys and 29.8% in girls. There were significant correlations between child's age (r=0.188, p=0.002), perceived child's weight (r=0.154, p=0.014), concem about child's weight (r=0.127,p= 0.014), pressure to eat (r=0.192p, =0.002), maternal control of child eating routines (r=0.152,p= 0.015), child control of snacking (r=0.125, p=0.045) with BMI-for-age. In conclusion, about one in four of the preschoolers were underweight. This study shows the need for nutrition intervention programs to include familial factor in the promotion of healthy body weight status among preschoolers.
