Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease and a major cause of chronic pain in the cat. The condition limits mobility, activity and severely compromises the quality of life for both the cat and the owner. During the last years, OA is recognized as a whole joint disorder that affects the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, synovial membrane and the menisci. The present reviews discuss the role of the meniscus in the development of stifle OA, with a particular focus on the basic science of the menisci, common meniscal lesions identified in the osteoarthritic stifle joint and their aetiology and significance. The meniscus is an intra-articular fibrocartilaginous semilunar structure that plays a critical role in joint stability, load distribution and shock absorption. Pathologic changes of meniscus associated with stifle OA include meniscal degeneration, mineralisation and tear and/or injury. Cellular reduction, disorganised collagen fibre and disturbances of collagen and non-collagen protein synthesis are common in the degenerative meniscus. Meniscal mineralisation is associated with cartilage pathology and can be an indicator of stifle OA. The changes in meniscal function and resilience can promote or increase the progression of ~A. However, mineralisation also represents a sesamoid bone in the menisci. Meniscal tear is a common injury that could happen to the meniscus, and it is commonly related to cranial cruciate ligament injury. The meniscal tears could be a contributory factor of stifle OA through breakdown and weakening of the meniscal architecture. Further studies should focus on the meniscal changes based on the molecular and biochemical changes to better understand their relevance in the development and progression of stifle OA.
