Abstract
A study of photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) with variable metabolic modes that increase the removal of nutrients, heavy metals, and organic pollutants from aquaculture wastewater. To investigate the efficacy of Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) from aquaculture waste in treating water quality for freshwater fish, isolated photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) from hatchery fish pond at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus wastewater will be used as an alternative treatment in treating ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in cultured tank and commercial PSB will used as positive control. Black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) was used in this experiment to produce the wastes and release extra ammonium through microbial decomposition and polluting the water quality. Furthermore, two types of aquatic plants also are being used which is floating aquatic plants from salvinia (Salvinia molesta) and submerged aquatic plant from hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) plant to compare the effectiveness of photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) and aquatic plants in maintaining the water quality. According to the results, the concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in the isolated PSB and positive control were considerably lower (p 0.05) than the nitrogen concentrations in the negative control throughout a broad range. The results also specified that the treatment from isolated PSB was able to treat wastewater and maintain the water quality of the fish tank. The photosynthetic bacteria cultured from wastewater and effect of water parameter on PSB also will be discuss in this paper. As conclusion, the results suggested that addition of photosynthetic bacteria to water improves the water quality as it changes the microbial community structure in the fish tank cultured.
