Abstract
Ammoniacal nitrogen contamination in surface water has reportedly posed a great threat to the environment. Ammoniacal nitrogen can be found in many types of sources and mostly enters the Malaysian water via municipal, agricultural, industrial, and also natural ways. Recently several technologies are being employed to remediate the ammoniacal nitrogen contamination in wastewater; however, these technologies are chemical-based and are not sustainable nor cost-effective. As a result, the present study aims to highlight the significance of phytoremeditation method by Nelumbo Nucifera or Lotus plants as an alternative for treating the contaminated surface water. Although the phytoremediation method has been proven to be sustainable and cost-effective for treating ammonizcal nitrogen, the method is still less efficient compared to the chemical-based methods. The methods was also reported to occur in a slow operation pace, this study try to employ nanoclay particles as adsorbents to accelerate the process. The approach was done by synthesizing the clay nanoparticles that were obtained from natural sources i.e. paddy field. The synthesized clay particles were subjected to the contaminated surface water that consists of lotus plants for 30 days. The treated water was scientifically observed and analyzed. The results have shown that the synthesized nanoclay particles have increased the efficiency of phytoremediantion in the removal of BOD, COD, and nitrate by a very noticeable amount. The best pH condition for nitrate removal efficiency is found to be at pH 4. From the results, we conclude that the ammoniacal nitrogen contaminant removal was successfully improved by the utilization of the phytoremediation method with the assistance of nanoclay particles.
