Abstract
A study was conducted to observe the diversity and catch composition of fish at three locations, Ocean (OC), Bintulu Waterfront (WF) and ABF Beach (ABF) in Bintulu, Sarawak. Sampling was carried out during the southwest monsoon season (dry season); 9th May 2022, 20 July 2022, and 30th August 2022. Two standard three-layer mesh gill net 2.5 cm, 5.0 cm and 7.5 cm mesh size with length of 15 m was used to collect the fishes. A total of 11 families and 16 species of fish were recorded during study period. The dominant family is Ariidae (13%) while the dominant fish species is Thryssa hamiltonii (15.2%) that was present in OC and WF as respectively. A total of seven species was recorded at ABF and the dominant species is Arius maculatus. There were six fish species present only at ABF where Leiognathus brevisrostris is the dominant species. The diversity index at WF (1.831) was higher compared to ABF (1.626) and OC (1.452). The evenness index was relatively similar for all stations with WF (0.9) ABF (0.8) and OC (0.9). Cluster analysis shows that among all three stations, ABF has greater species distribution compared to OC and WF while correlation tests shows that values that are (>0.05) is considered negatively correlated between water quality parameters and fish species occurrence. It was observed that more than 80% of fish individuals were at juvenile stage indicating the role of coastal lines, to certain extent as a nursery area. Similarity comparison of species community between stations showed that OC and WF are similar in distribution compared to ABF which has the highest distribution of fish. This current study would help prior to conserve and manage the fishery resources of Bintulu coastal water in future.
