Abstract

This study related to the identification of ectoparasites that infect wild snakeheads (Channa striata) using morphology characteristics. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the ectoparasites in wild snakeheads fish using morphological characteristics and to identify the associated risk factors of the disease. Eight wild snakehead samples were sampled from various locations in the present study, one fish from Miri, five from Bintulu and two from Mukah. The ectoparasite identification was carried out by examining the body of the fish by taking mucus, scales, gills, and fins. Prevalence and predilection were two indicators used to create the ectoparasite profile. Biometric considerations included the distribution of length and weight categories and condition factors. Seven out of eight examined fish samples contained ectoparasites, which were identified as Nematodes, Monogenean, and Epistylis sp. The gill was the organ most accessible to ectoparasite infection. Fish with the larger size (>40cm) and weight (>1000g) exhibited 100% parasite infestation. The information on ectoparasite that infected Channa striata can improve the aquaculture sector in snakehead fish farming more widely.
