Abstract

More than 600 freshwater fish species have been reported in Malaysia and over 250 in Sarawak. Freshwater fishes provide ecological services of great economic, nutritional, historical, and cultural value. It is believed that less than half of the freshwater fish globally are facing extinction and require immediate conservation. This research aims to investigate and focus on fish diversity and environmental parameters at Bakun Lake. Three sampling stations were randomly selected at the lake area and coordinates were taken. The fish were captured using three-layered gill nets, 4 to 6 holes umbrella-like fish traps, cast nets, hooks, and lines. The most dominant species were Tor douronensis (47.37%) followed by Tor tambra (36.28%) under family Cyprinidae. A greater abundance (82.88%) of fish community was observed at station 3 situated near the rainforest area and huge rocky area with high pH and low dissolved oxygen compared to the other stations. Overall Shannon diversity value (H’=1.320) indicates that Bungen river is highly diverse with Sarawak’s state fish species. T. tambra (b < 3) exhibited negative allometric growth whereas T. douronensis (b > 3) showed positive allometric growth. The deterioration in water quality, primarily dissolved oxygen falls into Class III of NWQS for Malaysia had significantly impacts the fish abundance, species variety, and richness in Bakun Lake. The new data obtained from this study is useful in updating information for better conservation and management strategies of fisheries industries, such as captured and recreational fisheries, indirectly developing Sarawak's ecotourism sector.
