Abstract

Stenochlaena palustris commonly known as midin is a fern from the family of Blechnaceae a climbing fern which with the appearance of thin black scales and stems. In addition this plant is a food among people in Malaysia. Nevertheless, S. palustris can be a potential weed in urban areas. Weeds can affect the economy, the envirorunent, human health and amenity. However, there are little information regarding S. palustris. The objectives of this study are to observe whether S. palustris is a potential weed migrant in urban areas and to observe S. palustris distribution in urban areas. Throughout the survey, the presence of S. palustris around urban areas in Bintulu were observed within 22 areas and 5 habitats ( stream or river, forest areas or near forest areas, buildings, roadsides and also empty areas). S. palustris tend to grow more along roadsides (50%) and less likely on buildings (6.7%). Overall, the distribution of S. palustris in the urban areas of Bintulu showed potential as weed based on the data collected in this study. It is recommended that this study can be used for future urban development in Bintulu.
