Abstract
Introduction: Secondhand smoke (SHS) from the combustion of tobacco products contains many of the same components as smokers' inhaled smoke, which causes sickness and premature mortality in people who do not smoke. There is no safe threshold for SHS exposure; even minimal exposure may lead to acute damage. However, it is hard to quit smoking and extremely difficult to maintain someone who has stopped smoking tobacco. Therefore, one of the best ways to overcome this problem is to make the house smoke-free. Objectives: 1) To determine the knowledge level of SHS among the rural population in Felda Gedangsa. 2) To assess the sociodemographic characteristics and their association with the knowledge level of SHS. 3) To identify the knowledge, beliefs, perceptions, barriers and encouragements for establishing SSH among the rural population in Felda Gedangsa. Methodology: Quantitative and qualitative study designs were conducted with 30 and 5 respondents respectively. The questionnaire was adopted and modified from a standard questionnaire while the interviews were based on topic guide which all the data collected were analysed by using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0 and NVivo 12 respectively. Results and Discussion: The respondents generally had a moderate (satisfactory) level of knowledge on SHS, in which 43.3% (n=13) of them got a satisfactory score followed by good score (40%, n=12) and poor score (16.7%, n=5) while the knowledge level had no association with all of the sociodemographic characteristics being studied. The obstacles to practising SFH extracted from this study can be divided into internal and external factors. Convenience, leisure time, habitual behaviour, and attitude were internal factors, while peer pressure was external. On the other hand, the influence of family, the availability of facilities, government roles, and quitting smoking were the encouragements for SFH. Conclusion: The rural community in Felda Gedangsa had a moderate understanding of SHS and SFH. Men's knowledge, beliefs and perceptions of SHS and SFH may influence the elements that become barriers and encouragements household smoking behaviours to establish and maintain SFH practise. It is critical for the government and interested parties to implement extensive programmes and efforts, such as interventions at both the family and community levels, to safeguard their generations from the health risks of the SHS. Keywords: Secondhand smoke, smoke-free home, rural population, tobacco products
