Abstract

Filarial parasites (superfamily Filarioidea) are vector-borne parasitic nematodes affecting vertebrate animals which include Dirofilaria spp., Brugia spp., and Acanthocheilonema spp. The local distribution of filarial parasites in dogs pose an important veterinary and public health concern due to their effects on animal health and potential zoonotic risk. This study aimed to detect the common filarial parasites and investigate the association between the presence of filarial parasites with different management practices of animal shelters in Selangor. For methodology, blood samples were obtained from 54 shelter dogs at four different shelters within three regions: Kuala Selangor, Hulu Langat, and Petaling. The samples were analysed microscopically using direct wet mount, thin blood film and Knott concentration test. Association between filariasis and risk factors were explored using the chi-square test. Overall, 6 (11.11%) out of 54 samples were positive for filariasis with only Dirofilaria spp. was detected. The prevalence of filarial parasites detected was significantly greater in shelters with a yearly practice of heartworm prevention and dogs roaming freely within the shelter. The proximity of shelter to forest and mosquito reservoirs were recognized to be additional risk factors associated with detection of filarial parasites (p<0.05). In conclusion, the study showed that Dirofilaria spp. was common filarial parasite found in dogs from animal shelters in Selangor. In addition, there was association between the management practices and detection of filariasis. Thus, the infected shelter dogs should be given prophylaxis for heartworm as recommended by the veterinarian accordingly.
