Abstract

Introduction: Ergonomics awareness in Malaysia is still in its early stages due to the lack of understanding and community practice. Thus, it should be disseminated to various industries for employees to become aware of ergonomics in the workplace. Various research has demonstrated that the Transportation and Storage industry has contributed to the musculoskeletal condition (MSD). Therefore, it is necessary to strictly infuse ergonomics knowledge. attitude, and practice (KAP) in courier industry to prevent the prevalent of musculoskeletal system disorders. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the association between Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of ergonomics principles and the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among manual handling workers in the courier service industry. Methodology: A self-administrated questionnaire was developed from previous study that includes socio-demographic background, occupational characteristics, KAP and modified nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire. Validity and reliability test were conducted before the questionnaire was used during the face to face interview session to collect the data from 95 respondents. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between KAP, and Chi-square test was conducted to determine the relationship between variables while multiple logistic regression used to identify the predictors of WRMSDs. Result and discussion: Courier workers' overall knowledge, attitude, and practice were moderate with scoring rates of 74.25%,68.58% and 71.64 % respectively. Overall prevalence at 50.5%, upper back (28.4%), lower back (27.4 %), ankles/feet (21.1%), shoulders (18.9%), wrist/hand (16.8 %), hips/thighs and knees (13.7 %), neck (10.4%) and elbow (11.6 %). There was a weak correlation between KAP. Knowledge and practice were variables associated with WRMSDs while gender, race, courier company and length of service were variables associated with KAP.In this study, practice level was found as predictor for the prevalence of MSD. Conclusion: The findings suggest that courier workers demonstrate moderate knowledge, attitude, and practice towards ergonomics. Therefore, effective training on manual handling should be emphasised to ensure the workers able to practise the principle of ergonomics during performing tasks. Keywords: KAP, ergonomics, WRMSDs, manual handling workers
