Abstract

Awareness to cat owners on recognising and detecting early clinical signs of osteoarthritis (OA) in their pet cats would assist in the early diagnosis of feline OA, accelerate treatment to relieve pain and decelerate OA progression, hence prolonging mobility in cats, ultimately improving the quality of life. Thus, a survey was conducted to understand better the knowledge of feline OA among Malaysian cat owners and to determine the association between socio-demographic factors and the knowledge level. A survey was conducted for three weeks, from 5 September 2022 to 25 September 2022 among a convenient sample of Malaysian cat owners aged 18 and above, excluding veterinarians, assistant veterinary officers, veterinary assistants, and veterinary students. Data was collected online using the Google Forms platform and then analysed using IBP SPSS Statistic Version 22. There were two parts to the survey: the first contained details on the socio-demographic profile and the second was an evaluation of knowledge regarding feline OA, risk factors, associated symptoms, and management. The questionnaire comprises multiple-choice and closed-ended questions. A total of 356 respondents participated in the study, with most respondents residing in Peninsular Malaysia. Results indicated that in the overall scoring of knowledge, 71.3% of the respondents had poor knowledge regarding various aspects of feline OA, 13.5% of respondents had moderate knowledge, and only 15.2% had good knowledge. No association between socio-demographic factors and the level of knowledge was observed. In conclusion, the findings have provided valuable insights into the knowledge level of feline OA among Malaysian cat owners. Therefore, raising awareness and education about feline OA among cat owners should be organised to improve knowledge regarding this chronic disease, the signs to look out for and the importance of managing the disease.
