Abstract

Introduction: Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV). DEN-1,2,3 and 4 are the four DENV serotypes that can infect a person four times. Vector control and surveillance are the main dengue prevention techniques because there is no specific medication or vaccine that can effectively protect against all four dengue serotypes. However, this strategy demands support, collaboration, and community involvement. A thorough understanding of the community’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to dengue prevention is required to ensure effective vector management and increase dengue control engagement within the community. Objectives: To identify the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice on dengue prevention among students in Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional survey was performed with 214 respondents selected using a simple random sampling method. A 49-question self-administered validated questionnaire was distributed to respondents via student email and WhatsApp applications. The acquired data was then analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software (SPSS) Version 27. Results and Discussion: Most of the students had moderate knowledge (17.14 ± 2.510), attitude (30.69 ± 4.065) and practice (7.97 ± 2.224) towards dengue prevention. There was a significant association between dengue prevention knowledge and practice (X2= 11.288, P = 0.013). The year of study had a significant association with knowledge (X2= 18.288, P = 0.013), attitude (X2= 18.526, P = 0.010) and practice (X2= 19.194, P = 0.014) of dengue prevention, while the factor of the study program (X2= 31.599, P = 0.002) were found to have significantly associated with the level of knowledge. Conclusion: 1st-year students and students from the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program were found to have poor knowledge, attitude, and practice on dengue prevention. Thus, college management should organize and regularly implement dengue control activities focusing on preventive action and expanding awareness of dengue prevention to ensure lifetime action and effective methods in controlling dengue.
