Abstract
Introduction: Despite the fact that the United Nations Environment Programme has identified microplastic (MPs) pollution as a major worldwide threat, little attention has been paid to MPs contamination in urban soil. Instead, this issue has been investigated extensively in agricultural soil. Accordingly, within the current study, MPs distribution and characteristics is studied within urban soil in different land uses from a district in Melaka, which is Melaka Tengah. Objectives: To provide understanding of MPs pollution and its characteristics in urban soils from different land use activities in (Melaka Tengah, Melaka) Methodology: 24 samples locations in six land uses in urban soil Melaka Tengah, Melaka were collected. The land use areas were residential areas, industries, agriculture, empty lands, playgrounds, and dumping site. The samples were pretreated by drying, density separation using NaCl solution. Identification and characterization of microplastics (size, colour and shape) was carried out using a stereomicroscope. Results and Discussion: The total average of microplastics size in urban soil was 721 μm ± 447.02 μm. Among the six different land uses, empty land areas have the largest MPs (823.89 μm ± 469.91 μm), followed by playground areas (784.53 μm ± 520.45 μm), residential areas (741.59 μm ± 479.20 μm), agricultural areas (645.76 μm ± 351.26 μm ), industrial areas ( 613.30 μm ± 368.38 μm) and dumping site area (375.75 μm ± 254.083 μm). However, there was no significant difference on MPs particle size distribution between different land uses. The small MPs (< 1-mm) were dominant (67%), and fragment MPs were widely found (66%). The black MPs (33%) accounted for the largest proportion and the lowest is blue MPs (1%). Conclusion: This study indicates the prevalence and characteristics of MPs in urban soil with different land uses in Melaka Tengah, Melaka, as well as information on MPs size distribution in each land use, and it provides insight into MPs pollution in urban soil.
