Abstract

This study was done to determine the effects of Tualang honey as a supplementation after exposure to stress in mice by evaluating haematology parameters, serum biochemistry and histopathology. Tualang honey is a type of multi-floral jungle honey that is produced by the rock bee (Apis dorsata) which nests on Tualang trees in Malaysia. Numerous studies have been conducted on the potential health benefits of Tualang honey as it possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for centuries as a form of treatment. The study population consisted of 33 mice that were acclimatised to human touch a week prior to the project. 3 mice were selected randomly and blood was collected from the heart; the liver, kidneys, adrenal glands and brain were preserved in 10% formalin for histopathology as a control. The remaining 30 mice were then separated into 5 groups(n=6) which consists of Control 2 (unstressed with supplementation); C1 (visually stressed with supplementation): C2 (visually stressed without supplementation); M1(auditory stressed with supplementation) and M2(auditory stressed without supplementation). Tualang honey was given orally, 2g/kg for 7 days. Mice were monitored with the aid of animal monitoring sheet and body weight was recorded daily. On the 8th day, 3 mice were randomly selected from each group and the procedures that was done on the control group previously was repeated. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the hemogram and serum biochemistry apart from lymphocytes for both supplemented and un-supplemented animals while the histopathological analysis showed some significant findings in liver, kidney and brain samples.
